About

Nederlands: (English below)

Mijn naam is Rona Kennedy.

My Name is Rona Kennedy. I am a British-Belgian transdisciplinary artist and writer. Using installation-performances, I build worlds, creating cracks: temporary autonomous sites for experiment and agency. As an artist I use performance, written texts, interventions in public space, audiovisual installations and workshops as ways to start (material and somatic) conversations. I am curious about what can come into existence in these encounters. Live performance as research and as artistic creation are inseparable in my work.

I am fascinated by (collective) practices that explore multivocality and reciprocity. I am part of several artist-collectives such as Migrating Dialogues which uses sound, text and performance to work on Migration, power and privilege and ZORAS collective. This Interdisciplinary collective of artists and activists explores how we can move beyond binaries of hope/lessness, in/action to develop multiple and complex practices for ecological and social change.

Since 2016, I have begun working intermodally as a thinking-doing process. I gather multiple voices on a subject/s. These can take the form of texts I am reading, interviews, field recordings and photo’s. I generate material in text, sound and rhythm and record myself. I re-listen to material and map everything visually. This way I weave immersive webs of images, projections, sounds and texts I can move around in and find composite meanings. I then reduce these worlds to portable units (a collage, a sound scape, a composite projection image,…) and decontextualize them. An example of this is: taking historical material about scientific racism, and South Africa under Apartheid for a walk in a Finnish Forest. This process disorientates and reframes the material, adds new material, and encourages both affinity and dissensus. Layers build up, there is friction and spaces open up for interpretation and dialogue with possible audiences.

Live performance is both a form of research and an artistic product in my work. I discover meaning and connection between materials in the moments of experimenting and/or observing reactions and interactions between performers and audience members.

HerStory

Nederlands: (English below)

We maakten performances i.s.m. o.a. kunstenfestivals, culturele organisaties en lokale overheden in Brussel en Vlaanderen. (o.a. Brussel Bravo, Enter Festival, Z33, Stad Gent).

I was born in Swaziland, moving country every two years as a child, with my expatriate Scottish parents. After studying theatre and performance at the University of Warwick, UK, I worked in London directing, running workshops, performing with young people living in homeless accommodation, sex workers, children with refugee status, professional performers and activists.  On moving to Belgium in 1999, I continued to direct, write, and perform in different contexts. As part of the duo bRaSs, with Sigrid Laget, I began writing and performing my own cabaret material at queer events and in 2006, after winning the Gaga comedy cup for young cabaret performers, we began touring as a duo and then later I continued as a solo performer.

Parallel to this, I ran an artistic laboratory as part of performance collective Fou De Coudre We were experimenting with how performative interventions have impact on people’s perception of their environment, both in terms of the literal urban space and media discussions generating public meaning. (Ace Bank, Garvida Consulting, Play/work, Boer’nBrood). This included the HOAX bank Ace Bank:Ace Bank Film

In 2014 I directed a devised performance with undocumented migrant mothers about in/visibility and bringing up children. This was based on the Phd thesis of Tine Brouckaert. Here is a short documentary film of rehearsals and interviews with participants. https://vimeo.com/122732169

I presented a paper ‘The practice of (in)visibility’ about this at the Critical Arts conference at University of Brighton in 2015.

Since 2016 I have been researching personal and colonial histories, migration, power and privilege within the artistic research project Migrating Dialogues. Makers collective FAHREN is made up of myself, Fabian Espinosa Diaz (Chile/Paraguay) and Helena Elshout (Belgium). I am currently working on an installation/performance as artistic research which brings together these histories and attempts to re-frame and re-articulate them. My performances are also a form of research.
